Jose Watanabe, the Ice Guard

September 8, 2007

José Watanabe (1946-2007) was a Peruvian poet who was born in Laredo, a large sugar cane farm in northern Peru. His father was a Japanese immigrant and his mother was a Peruvian of Andean origin. In a very intimate way, Watanabe fused his two deep cultural backgrounds in brief but intense poetic work. In 2000, he published in Colombia an anthology entitled El Guardián del Hielo. Three years later he won the “José Lezama Lima” poetry award in Casa de las Américas, Havana, because of this book. Isabel Espronceda, Abel Milanés and I did this short video for presenting the book. It was also featured in Cuba National TV.Watanabe was also involved in the film industry as a screenwriter, production designer and art director. Great guy.

Humanitarian Auction Casa de las Americas 2003

April 8, 2003
